GAA Update

It has been a busy few months in GAA. Three teams represented the school in Cumann na mBunscoil games. The girls’ team made it through to the quarter final and were unfortunate to be beaten by a stronger side on the day. The junior boys’ football team also had great success winning a number of matches. The biggest round of applause, however, must go to the senior boys’ football team. The boys were very determined this year and their hard work paid off and landed them a place in a cherished Croke Park final. It was the first time since 2008 that a football team from St.Fiachra’s Senior School has played in a final in Croke Park. There was great excitement around the school on the days leading up to the final.  All of the school got to witness our stars of the future. Unfortunately on the day we were beaten by a stronger team from Ballyroan BNS. However the boys did the school, their parents and their clubs proud. Many thanks to all the teachers involved in taking out teams, especially Ms McIntyre, Ms Roche and Ms O’Brien.

In September we unfortunately said goodbye to GPO Niall Williams, who has worked with the school over the last number of years through Whitehall Colmcille GAA Club. Niall has played a large part in the school’s success in the GAA. The children were sad to see him leave and many children have fond memories of his time with us. We wish him every success in his new role with the Camogie Association. Our new GPO, Sean Cleary, will be starting soon and we are looking forward to welcoming him to the school.

The girls of 4th, 5th and 6th have been taking part in a number of camogie sessions after school on Mondays. They are having lots of fun. It is great to see many girls actively involved in camogie in the school.

In September we said goodbye to Niall….

In October the boys senior team got through to the finals in Croke Park. Cormac Costello spoke to the boys about his Croke Park experiences.

Camogie All Ireland Finals

The camogie team were out in force early this year as we were asked to participate in the mini-games at the Camogie All-Ireland Finals in Croke Park. The girls played at half time of the Liberty Insurance Premier Junior Championship Final between Dublin and Westmeath. There was great excitement on the day and the girls enjoyed the day very much.

The day also marked a special occasion for Ella Troy as she wore the senior camogie team jersey for the first time. Three years ago Ella’s grandmother Eileen Troy won a set of jerseys and kindly donated them to the school for the camogie team. This set of jerseys have been very lucky for us. The jerseys have the initials of PJT on the sleeve in memory of Eileen’s son P.J Troy who sadly lost his life at a young age. Ella will no doubt wear the school jersey with pride many times in the future.

Ella is pictured below with her grandmother Eileen and her grandfather Paddy

Division 1 Champions

June was a very busy month in St Fiachra’s as the camogie team contested the Division 1 final in Croke Park. The girls had worked very hard since early in the year training before and after school. On the day all their hard work paid off. The girls were outstanding. The opposition Loreto Ps, Rathfarnham battled very hard but our girls were determined to take home the silverware on the day. All of the girls were fantastic but a special mention has to be made to Catriona McMahon. She missed our last two outings to Croke Park but this year she made sure to hit the headlines. She walked off the pitch having scored 9 goals! There was great cheer and excitement all around the stadium when our captain Sophie Forristal lifted the Corn Bean Uí Phuirseil cup.

Camogie County Stars

The camogie team were very fortunate to be chosen to represent Dublin at an inter-county tournament in June. The 12 sixth class girls represented their county with pride on a wet and miserable summer day in Portlaoise. The girls left the school early in the morning. The girls played four games against Wexford, Carlow, Kilkenny and Kildare. A great day was had by all and a stop off at Supermacs on the way home went down a treat.

Camogie Stars!

Congratulations to four of our camogie girls who have been picked for the Dublin Camogie U14 Academy Panel. We were very fortunate to have a number of girls participating in trials. After a number of sessions a panel has been picked included in this panel are Ruth Fitzsimons (Whitehall Colmcille), Isabelle McGarry (Whitehall Colmcille) , Caitriona McMahon (Whitehall Colmcille) and Roisin Boland (St Vincents). Well done also to Clodagh Cummins (Whitehall Colmcille) and Kate Kelly (Whitehall Colmcille) who also took part in the sessions. It was fantastic to see so many girls being chosen for trials.

Well done girls!
